The Basketball Blitz
*** 190+ GAMES *** 5 DAYS *** 2 VENUES ***
The Annual Castleisland Basketball
Blitz is recognised as one of the biggest sporting events held in Ireland
over the Christmas period. Now in its 34th year
(Christmas 2003), the blitz runs for five
consecutive days, from the morning of St. Stephens Day, 26th December,
right up to the night of the 30th.
Games are played non-stop each day from 9am to 10pm in two venues in the town - The Community Centre hosts about two-thirds of the games over the five days while St. John's Hall is usually the location for the remainder.
Every age is catered for throughout 24+ divisions - from the young boys and girls who play National School Junior A (Under 10's), right up through U15's, U17's, Senior Ladies and Men, and finally Div. 5 Men (for the somewhat lesser talented players!)
The number one competition played is Premier Men - which is contested by the top teams from the Irish League. A number of teams from overseas have also travelled to play in this division- from England, USA and mainland Europe.
The Blitz is a major community event and an occasion for all ages. A great atmosphere is guaranteed as large crowds always turn out - with in excess of 10,000 attending over the five days in recent years.

Well worth a visit & Just remember to look out for the Spotters if you do decide to drop in!
...although if you're hoping
to meet one of the Trainspotters,
then a visit to Toms or the Snug would be a better bet!
